Quetta, Pakistan —A big insurgent strike has occurred in Balochistan, with militants hijacking a train. The Jaffar Express which was going from Quetta to Peshawer, more than 400 people were on board on this train. Out of this around 180 are being held hostage and at least 11 have been killed.
کوئٹہ، پاکستان —بلوچستان میں ایک بڑا باغی حملہ ہوا ہے، عسکریت پسندوں نے ایک ٹرین کو ہائی جیک کر لیا۔ جعفر ایکسپریس کوئٹہ سے پشاور جارہی تھی، اس ٹرین میں 400 سے زائد افراد سوار تھے۔ اس میں سے 180 کے قریب یرغمال بنائے گئے ہیں اور کم از کم 11 مارے جا چکے ہیں۔
We’re talking about a big attack like we’ve ever seen in films. First, let’s look at how and who carried out the hijack. The BLA have claimed responsibility for it. The BLA is the Balochistan Liberation Army, it’s an armed separatist group in Pakistan’s Balochistan Province.

The terrain there is extremely rugged, so the railway lines have a lot of tunnels.The BLA apparently took advantage of this by firing on the train and trapping it within a tunnel, then blowing up nearby rails, and then boarded the train and kidnapped people; approximately 100 security personnel were also taken hostage.
وہاں کا علاقہ انتہائی ناہموار ہے، اس لیے ریلوے لائنوں میں بہت زیادہ سرنگیں ہیں۔ BLA نے بظاہر اس کا فائدہ اٹھاتے ہوئے ٹرین پر فائرنگ کر کے اسے ایک سرنگ میں پھنسایا، پھر قریبی ریلوں کو اڑا دیا، اور پھر ٹرین میں سوار ہو کر لوگوں کو اغوا کر لیا۔ تقریباً 100 سیکورٹی اہلکار بھی یرغمال بنائے گئے تھے۔
In total the BLA claims 182 people are in their custody, they also claim 11 people were killed, they have issued a warning to Pakistan Security Forces that If you intervene, the consequences will be terrible; what is the Pakistani government doing? They’ve declared an emergency in the neighbourhood. They have also dispatched helicopters and security personnel through the train, but as of now, this is a live hostage scenario, and the BLA still controls the train.
مجموعی طور پر بی ایل اے کا دعویٰ ہے کہ 182 افراد ان کی تحویل میں ہیں، وہ یہ بھی دعویٰ کرتے ہیں کہ 11 افراد مارے گئے، انہوں نے پاکستان سیکیورٹی فورسز کو وارننگ جاری کی ہے کہ اگر آپ نے مداخلت کی تو اس کے نتائج بھیانک ہوں گے۔ پاکستانی حکومت کیا کر رہی ہے؟ انہوں نے پڑوس میں ایمرجنسی کا اعلان کر دیا ہے۔ انہوں نے ٹرین کے ذریعے ہیلی کاپٹر اور سیکیورٹی اہلکار بھی روانہ کیے ہیں، لیکن فی الحال، یہ ایک زندہ یرغمالی کا منظر ہے، اور BLA اب بھی ٹرین کو کنٹرول کرتا ہے۔
Now, I know this attack sounds daring and risky, but it should not come as a surprise. Insurgency has been surging in Balochistan, this is a resourcer province in Pakistan’s West, also the largest by area. Balochistan is the largest province in the country and it is home to resources like natural gas, coal and gold. Despite this wealth, the residents have never benefited politically. They have been hounded by Pakistan’s military, and their financial resources have been sent over to China.
اب، میں جانتا ہوں کہ یہ حملہ جرات مندانہ اور خطرناک لگتا ہے، لیکن یہ حیران کن نہیں ہونا چاہیے۔ بلوچستان میں شورش عروج پر ہے، یہ پاکستان کے مغرب میں ایک وسائل والا صوبہ ہے، جو رقبے کے لحاظ سے بھی سب سے بڑا ہے۔ بلوچستان ملک کا سب سے بڑا صوبہ ہے اور یہ قدرتی گیس، کوئلہ اور سونے جیسے وسائل کا گھر ہے۔ اس دولت کے باوجود یہاں کے باشندوں کو کبھی سیاسی فائدہ نہیں پہنچا۔ انہیں پاکستان کی فوج نے پکڑا ہے، اور ان کے مالی وسائل چین کو بھیجے گئے ہیں۔
In fact, Balochistan is a key part of China’s belt and road projects in Pakistan, projects that they have not benefited from. So, the local outrage, there are a number of insurgent groups in this region. Last week they announced a major move that all the Balochistan’s armed groups decided to unify their commands, basically fight under a single military setup and days later this attack has happened.
درحقیقت بلوچستان پاکستان میں چین کے بیلٹ اینڈ روڈ منصوبوں کا کلیدی حصہ ہے، ایسے منصوبے جن سے انہیں کوئی فائدہ نہیں ہوا۔ لہذا، مقامی غم و غصہ، اس علاقے میں باغی گروپوں کی ایک بڑی تعداد موجود ہیں. پچھلے ہفتے انہوں نے ایک بڑے اقدام کا اعلان کیا کہ بلوچستان کے تمام مسلح گروپوں نے اپنی کمانڈز کو متحد کرنے کا فیصلہ کیا، بنیادی طور پر ایک ہی فوجی سیٹ اپ کے تحت لڑیں اور کچھ دنوں بعد یہ حملہ ہوا ہے۔
So, like I said it’s not a surprise, Balochistan reported 150 attacks last year it was 119% up compared to the year before. In fact, this very same train line has been targeted before the service had been shut down for two months last year, but it was resumed in October 2024. I suspect there will be another shutdown after this.

Either way this is a massive challenge for Pakistan, their military will have to flush out these Fighters and free the hostages. The rugged train will make this operation very difficult, but even after that, questions will be asked about Pakistan’s handling of Balochistan about its failure to contain these groups.
